Stretch Belts
If you’ve come to this website, you probably already know what stretch belts are (or have recognised them from the pictures above). If you’re still unsure what stretch belts are, they’re basically belts that women wear (and that are especially made solely for women) between their stomach and their chest. They wear them for several reasons (not least fashion) which I’ll discuss later, and they have become very popular in the past couple of years (due to their practical applications as well as their stylistic qualities).
It is true that most belts that are worn today don’t serve any real purpose – you can quite easily get a pair of trousers made to fit your waist so that you don’t actually need to wear a belt (unlike in the old days, where a belt was an essential item of clothing). This means that most belts worn today merely act as a backup (in case your elastic or closing mechanism on your trousers breaks) or as a fashion accessory. For example, we’re at the point now where some people wear belts completely independently of their trousers (i.e. not through the belt loop holes). Also, sometimes you’ll see people wearing two or three belts are a time – most of which are completely redundant (since you only ever need one). These are, obviously the extremes of fashion, but it’s true that most fashion crazes (such as stretch belts) started with the extremists wearing them (before they were eventually picked up by catwalk models and worn by the stretch belts loving public).
Stretch belts (also known as stretchable belts) as the name suggests are belts that are elasticised so that they can stretch in and out. Most belts, as we know are made from leather (or leather imitations) and are rigid and tight. The common stretch belts is usually at least a few inches wide, and clips around a woman’s midriff by hooking together two clips at either end. 99% of stretch belts come in a plain black colour, with only the clips at either end being the decoration (most clips are usually gold or silver and are designed in an elaborate way that is not too dissimilar to that of a fancy door knob).
The reason they are black is because they provide a nice contrast to most dresses that women wear. For example, since most women like to wear (or rather, it is the fashion now to wear) dresses that are bright green or blue or pink (or various other colours), stretch belts provide a nice compliment to this colour and help to break the outfit up a bit whilst adding a main focal point to it (or what you might call a ‘centrepiece’).
What are Stretch Belts Used for?
There are a few different reasons why stretch belts are so popular these days, but the main one is because they are so versatile and are worn for so many excellent reasons. First of all, there’s the aesthetic quality that they provide you with, since they look great with most outfits and are a cheap accessory (especially when you think about the amount of use you’ll get out of one). For any girl out there at the moment, a stretch belt is one thing that you absolutely must have in your wardrobe.
As well as their aesthetic quality, stretch belts also have several practical purposes.
First of all, they are a great way to subtly keep your waist tucked in and to keep it nice and tight. Many girls are self conscious about their bodies, and are especially worried about the size of their middle. Stretch belts provide a way to hold everything together nice and firmly, whilst never being too tight (in the way that corsets are). The main cause of this flexibility comes from the elastic material that they are made from, which gives you room to expand your chest as you breath. Another great benefit of stretch belts is that they help keep you bust push up nice and high, which is something we all can all appreciate!
Where to Buy Stretch Belts
You can buy stretch belts online or offline, since they are sold nearly everywhere these days (due to their fashionable nature). While it’s probably a bit cheaper to buy a stretch belt online, if you’ve never bought one before (or if you’ve never bought the right kind that fits you before) I’d definitely recommend that you go to a ‘real’ shop and try on a few to find out exactly what size fits you best. The reason that many people have trouble with these stretch belts’ sizes is because they fit around you in an unusual way, meaning that you won’t have anything (i.e. any other item of clothing) to compare sizes to. Most high street clothing shops now stock stretch belts, so you should have no problems locating one that’s right for you.
Another advantage to buying stretch belts offline is that you can literally walk into a shop, choose one that you like (and that fits), pay your money and walk out with it – meaning you can then wear it that very night. This is not the case with online shopping, since you’ll usually have to wait at least a week or two before the item that you’ve bought arrives on your doorstep.
